Devore

merino & linen devore shawl
This is Kate's most recent work. In 2009 she began exploring weaving in combination with devore, a surface design technique which "devours" cellulose fiber. These scarves are woven with two types of fiber: cellulose (linen, cotton, bamboo) and protein (silk or wool). After they are woven, Kate screen prints patterns onto them with a mild acid. Where the acid prints, the cellulose fiber is dissolved, leaving the protein fiber intact. The scarves are fulled either gently for a soft "flat" piece, or more vigorously for a felted piece with more texture. Click on image to enlarge.

Several years ago Kate wove a simple cloth out of silk and wool. She tossed it into the washing machine, agitated it with soap and water and witnessed a magical transformation. When the wool shrank, it pulled the silk with it, causing it to bump, wave, and curl. This was the beginning of experimentation with differential shrinkage to create highly textured cloth. These pieces are woven with silk and merino wool and are dyed with natural dyes. Click on image to enlarge.
